SCOUTING AS AN INVESTMENT
How do you measure the return on your investment in the program of the Boy Scouts of America?
For every 100 Boys who join the Boy Scouts:
- Only rarely will one be brought before Juvenile Court
- Four will become Eagle Scouts
- Twelve will have their first contact with a church
- Five will earn their Church Award
- Eighteen will develop hobbies used during their adult life
- Eight will enter a vocation that was learned through the Merit Badge program
- Seventeen will be future Scouting volunteers
- Two will use his Scouting skills to save his own life
- One will use his Scouting skills to save another person's life
11% of boys in the United States are members of the Boy Scouts.
11% of Annapolis Midshipmen earned the rank of Eagle Scout, 25% were members of the BSA
12% of USAF Academy Cadets earned the rank of Eagle Scout, 23% were members of the BSA
15% of West Point Cadets earned the rank of Eagle Scout, 35% were members of the BSA
12% of all NASA Astronauts earned the rank of Eagle Scout, 57% were members of the BSA.
In the 112th Congress, 5% earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and 36% were members of the BSA.
The "Values of Americans" study conducted by Harris Interactive revealed that:
Compared to their non-Scout counterparts, men who were Scouts are more likely to:
- Earn a college degree (35% vs. 17%)
- Own their own homes (74% vs. 65%)
- Have a higher average household income ($80,000 vs. $61,000)
83% of men who were Scouts agree that the values they learned in Scouting continue to be very important to them today.
The nearly 8,080 San Diego and Imperial County volunteers donate an average of 20 hours per month to the
BSA, totaling 1,939,200 hours in one year. Independent Sector projects the average value of this time to
be $23.40 an hour, which equates to $45,3777,280.*

What is Friends of Scouting (FOS)?
The San Diego Imperial Council serves nearly 28,000 youth in the San Diego and Imperial Counties. A budget of over $4 million is needed to provide the facilities, support materials, programs, activities and leadership for our community.
The annual FOS is planned, directed, and conducted by volunteers. There is virtually no other volunteer-run fund raising campaign of this magnitude in the United States!
